I was walking through the woods the other day when I saw a trusted senior I've often encountered.

We had a brief conversation, before I continued on my way.

But, at the approach of an icy hill, I worried that his progress would be impeded, and although he didn't say anything to the contrary, I was still somewhat anxious all the same.

I didn't want to hover and make him think that he couldn't do it, individual dignity, no matter what the age, of the utmost importance, so I left him to make his own way up the icy hill out of respect.

But I waited near the top for him to emerge and long after the traditional amount of time it should have taken, I went back to the icy hilltop and found him struggling to make his way.

At that point I offered my hand and we ascended the hill together.

I'm confident that I preserved his dignity.

And helped him to overcome the elements.
