The problem with penetrating a social group lies in being able to bluff your way through the unspoken. There are usually subjects of conversation that are avoided, their semantic being existing primarily in metaphor and tone. If you have trouble discerning the objects to which these subtle tonal and metaphorical displacements correspond, your verbal capital may have trouble actively accruing, depending on the seductive longevity of your novelty.
