Whenever whales beach themselves it's of the utmost importance to get them back in the water.
But in answer to the question, "why do some whales choose to beach themselves?", the answer may be that they're seeking to live on land.
If the majority (if not every one) of Earth's terrestrial based lifeforms indeed came from sea, wouldn't they have had to beach themselves at some point?
A wild risk that accrued evolutionary benefits over time?
If it happened in the past why wouldn't it be happening now as well?
Still, beached whales tend to die even if their goal is to become land-based super whales.
Thus it's always best to help them back into the water asap.
