*I think "communal madness millions dead" makes a more effective last line, because it's important to remember how things can spiral out of control and lead to disastrous wars, like in The Lord of the Rings "some things shouldn't be forgotten", but there's the possibility of misinterpretation, of people thinking that such memories are so abhorrent that we should forget them, so I decided to change the line to "the sacrifices which protect".
