I don't think Cassavetes was a snob. 

He directs some of the best films ever made, and then still makes movies like Gloria and Big Trouble. 

I would say it's a shame that someone so talented had to direct those films, if he hadn't been cool enough to want to direct them regardless. 

An ideal team player and definitive friend.
