It's not that they somehow knew or guessed, it was that invisible traces were left like mental fingerprints which could be read by ascetics. Hence, it wasn't a guess it was a reasonable intuition derived profitably from a sixth sense, cultivated by a direct (yet intangible) link with the aura.
