Another reason to check out classic films, apart from learning to develop an appreciation for the different ways in which filmmakers told stories way back when, are you aware of the Criterion Collection?, is to revel in a world where the internet and cellphones didn't exist, and people had to find alternative means to communicate with one another. A cool essay or book might examine film narratives as they transformed into a more web-based technosavvy literature, complete with chronologies and seminal exemplars. I wish I had time to do that. Perhaps it's already out there (I don't mean this blog)!

*I suppose a lot of new films are set in that past.
