Strange year at the Oscars. It's perhaps the darkest they've ever been. Halloween attire seems appropriate. Not much light shining through.
Still, several strong films in the running, Parasite with the most original idea, but will it win if it wasn't made in the U.S?, it may have ended bizarrely, but remains full of shocks and surprises. Joker redefines comic book films at a time when they're wildly proliferating, pulling off the remarkable feat of making the arthouse mainstream. Todd Phillips deserves the serious credit. I thought Marriage Story had the best script and scenes but it was released on Netflix which could still lead to it being overlooked. None of the best picture nominees pulled me in with more grip than 1917. It'd be cool if Little Women won.
